IAA Mobility 2025: Elli launches bidirectional charging pilot and starts recruiting
Energy independence at home: At IAA Mobility 2025, Elli is launching a comprehensive pilot project for bidirectional charging of electric vehicles. This technology can reduce charging costs by up to 75% . At the same time, Elli starts recruiting pilot participants in Germany.Energy market trading: In a follow-up project, Elli will make the energy stored in EVs available via a virtual power plant connected to the European Power Exchange (EPEX). Elli’s in-house trading team ensures continuous market access 24 hours a day, seven days a week.Driving the energy transition in Europe: The goal is to integrate Elli -operated large-scale storage systems and bidirectional charging solutions into a “Managed Battery Network” (MBN). This network will help stabilize the use of volatile renewable energy and accelerate the energy transition across Europe.

The Volkswagen Group brand Elli (Charging and Energy) is taking its Energy business unit to the next level by now offering energy trading as a service to external customers.
Renewable electricity supply helps businesses optimize energy costs and strengthen independence from fossil fuels – Elli delivers the services und is structuring the electricity procurement from renewable sources for their production needs, taking advantage of Elli`s access to the EPEX SPOT market. Elli has been structuring the electricity procurement for a major industrial customer from renewable sources for their production needs since January, taking advantage of Elli’s access to the EPEX SPOT market. The aim is to compensate for fluctuations in the production of wind and solar power through targeted purchases and sales. Elli had already acquired its trading license on Europe's largest electricity trading exchange in 2023 and has since undergone an intensive test phase. Giovanni Palazzo, CEO of Elli , emphasizes: "With the step from proprietary trading to energy services, Elli and the Volkswagen Group are opening up new business areas in a rapidly growing market environment. We will show how flexible and market-oriented electricity procurement works for energy-intensive companies and how we can support them in optimizing their energy use, for example through structured portfolio management, demand-side management, or the marketing of large-scale storage systems."

The Volkswagen Group and its subsidiaries PowerCo and Elli are pushing sustainable mobility "made in Europe" at the IAA Mobility 2025. They are showcasing pioneering technologies for the automotive industry: The world's first Group test vehicle with solid-state battery provides a glimpse of the battery technology of tomorrow. PowerCo’s Unified Cell, which will be used for the first time in the Electric Urban Car Family of Volkswagen, ŠKODA and CUPRA, is ready for series production. In combination with the new battery system, it will provide a technological leap in terms of performance, cost efficiency and flexibility. The Volkswagen Group is consistently expanding its know-how in e-mobility and now has the broadest range of technologies on the market – from combustion engines to PHEVs and all-electric vehicles to battery and energy technologies.
The Volkswagen Group and its brands are pushing ahead with technological progress at full speed. We have taken key technologies of e-mobility – such as battery cells, battery systems and electric drives – into our own hands and can thus develop the best solutions for our customers. At the same time, we are strengthening Europe as an automotive location through regional, resilient and sustainable development and production. Our first Group vehicle with a solid-state battery, the Electric Urban Car Family equipped with our new Unified Cell and the construction of Elli’s first large-scale storage system in Salzgitter are further milestones on our way to becoming a global technology driver in the automotive industry.

At the press conference at 9 a.m., Group CEO Oliver Blume and Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, will present the Electric Urban Car Family and have a surprise in store. 12:40-1:00 p.m. second press conference:Volkswagen Group Technology will set an example for sustainable mobility “Made in Europe” and, together with its tech subsidiaries PowerCo and Elli , will showcase pioneering technologies for key future fields in the automotive industry. The focus will be on cross-brand strategy topics such as the new unified cell and the new battery system for the Electric Urban Car Family, a concrete outlook on the battery technology of tomorrow and the entry into another highly exciting business area in the energy sector. 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m panel discussion “Design drives distinction.”:The panel discussion with CEO Oliver Blume and Head of Design Michael Mauer will center on the Volkswagen Group’s design strategy. Design goes beyond a distinguishing feature, it is a factor for success. This is demonstrated by the presentations of the design strategies of the Volkswagen, Scout and Porsche brands, explained by the brands' design managers – from brand and product identity to iconic models. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for interviews with design managers Andras Mindt (Chief Designer at Volkswagen Passenger Cars) and Chris Benjamin (Chief Designer Scout), as well as Michael Mauer, Head of Group Design and Chief Designer at Porsche.

Volkswagen Group Charging GmbH (Elli ) is strengthening its position as one of Europe’s leading charging providers. As of now, e-mobility customers can access around 900,000 public charging points across 28 European countries using the Elli app, Elli Charging Card, or Charge&Fuel Card – including 80,000 high-power charging (HPC) stations. The rapid expansion comes alongside the rollout of a new, transparent pricing model, making charging across Europe more convenient, reliable, and cost-effective.
“Our Elli charging network is seamless and reliable – a key enabler of borderless electric mobility. With every new charging point, we bring e-mobility closer to people’s everyday lives,” says Joschi Jennermann, CEO of the newly established Elli Mobility, a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group Charging (Elli ) now responsible for the Group’s charging and fueling services. “Elli’s new tariff model ensures transparent and straightforward pricing, and includes features such as international roaming, Plug&Charge, and affordable high-power charging through Ionity.” As a real-world test of the network, Guiness World Record holder Rainer Zietlow is partnering with Elli and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles for an ambitious new journey around the world in an ID.
