As a pioneer in innovative mobility services, we see autonomous driving as a quantum leap into the future. Autonomous ride-sharing services will make our mobility more comfortable and safer, more sustainable and accessible for everyone.

“Advanced driver assistance systems and automated driving functions are an important part of our software strategy. They offer a high level of customer benefit, enable a new product experience and are of great economic importance for the Volkswagen Group.”

Automated driving – pretty smart

The cars of our Group brands have long been equipped with a wide range of smart driving assistants. We are working flat out to drive innovation and digitalization with a focus on our global regions.

  • Customers in Europe will soon be able to use new driving functions for semi-automated and highly automated driving in all vehicle classes, including small cars, for example. This is made possible by a scalable platform for assisted and automated driving that we are developing together with Bosch.
  • We also want to offer driving functions up to highly automated driving in all vehicle classes in China. Together with Carizon, we are developing an AI-supported automated driving system that takes local traffic conditions into account. Safety in every driving situation is our top priority.
  • For the EU and the USA, we are aiming for speedy series approval of the driverless VW ID. Buzz AD. It is the basis for fully autonomous mobility services with entire vehicle fleets.

CARIAD designs automotive software that supports the Volkswagen Group on its way to becoming a global automotive tech driver.

Autonomous driving – even safer and more comfortable on the road in future

Driving a car without having to intervene: This is no longer a utopia, but will soon be a reality. Driving functions will then be taken over by technology and software on request – networked, digital and safe. And we can sit back and relax.

We are focusing the portfolio of our Group brands both on autonomous vehicles for mobility services and on operating software for autonomous vehicle fleets.

Mobile services and solutions for fleets – scalable for large series

Our cities need connected and affordable mobility solutions. We at the Volkswagen Group see this as a great opportunity – and are the first vehicle manufacturer to develop an autonomous, self-driving Level 4 fleet vehicle for large-scale production. With fleets based on the VW ID. Buzz AD, we will be offering passengers a new way to get from A to B easily in the future.

For us, innovation means that we consistently think ahead right from the development stage. Our vehicles are designed from the outset for production in large series. This makes the fleets almost infinitely scalable – a major advantage over our competitors.

Our product portfolio is holistic: The overall solution from our subsidiary MOIA consists of autonomous vehicles and operating software for autonomous vehicle fleets. This provides our customers with an all-round complete mobility system. It brings automated mobility and transport-as-a-service solutions within reach.

Pilot project: the autonomous mobility service in Hamburg

The first major test for a mobility service is currently underway in Hamburg with the VW ID. Buzz AD, our fully autonomous shuttle vehicle. Sascha Meyer, CEO of our partner MOIA: "In addition to the driving function in heavy traffic, we are testing all functions for the safe and comfortable transport of customers. Selected people can book the autonomous MOIAs and be taken to their destination with the difference that the vehicle drives autonomously." All vehicles will be integrated into the MOIA software environment. The software

  • controls the entire fleet in real time,
  • provides automated support for passengers,
  • monitors safety and
  • seamlessly integrates with existing booking apps.

The vision of our innovative ride-sharing service: more mobility for everyone, less traffic for cities.

Teaser for the IAA Mobility 2025 eventsite

The IAA MOBILITY will take place in Munich from 9th to 14th September, 2025. On its way to becoming a global technology driver in the automotive industry, the company will provide plenty of proof points for this in the form of technological innovations and celebrate several vehicle world premieres from 7th to 12th September.

The specified fuel consumption and emission data does not refer to a single vehicle and is not part of the offer but is only intended for comparison between different types of vehicles. Additional equipment and accessories (additional components, tyre formats, etc.) can alter relevant vehicle parameters such as weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamics, affecting the vehicle's fuel consumption, power consumption, CO₂ emissions and driving performance values in addition to weather and traffic conditions and individual driving behavior. Further information on official fuel consumption data and official specific CO₂ emissions for new passenger cars can be found in the "Guide to fuel economy, CO₂ emissions and power consumption for new passenger car models", which is available free of charge from all sales dealerships and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, D-73760 Ostfildern, Germany and at www.dat.de/co2.
