Artificial Intelligence in the Automotive Industry
In every process, we examine how artificial intelligence (AI ) can improve the result so that we can offer our customers even more attractive products and organize our work more efficiently.
Wherever we see potential, we utilize artificial intelligence in a targeted manner. Scalable, responsible and with clear industrial benefits. Our ambition: AI everywhere, in every process. Hauke Stars
The value of artificial intelligence – no process without AI
For us, AI is a strategic driver on the road to the future of the automotive industry. Whether in autonomous driving or in quality assurance, in the supply chain or in administrative work: We are bringing artificial intelligence into all areas. In this way, we are accelerating development cycles, automating processes and promoting new ideas – including in design and material construction. This is how we are actively shaping the future of the automotive industry.
Artificial intelligence in practice – more than 1,200 AI applications in use Over 1,200 AI applications are already active across the Group, with hundreds more in development or about to be implemented. Artificial intelligence is used in all central areas of the Volkswagen Group: from vehicle development and production to cybersecurity and also in the Group-wide exchange of knowledge. We want to become significantly faster and more efficient through the consistent, scalable use of AI along the entire automotive value chain.
Advantages through AI We use artificial intelligence to improve our products and processes. The difference is tangible: more attractive vehicles and faster availability of technologieseven better service for customersmore efficient use of energy and materials in productionlower costs and CO₂ emissions
Artificial intelligence – human judgment
AI needs rules, and this also applies to the automotive industry. That is why we act on the basis of ethical standards and European regulation.

The Car of the Future
Automobile mobility of tomorrow – far more than just driving a car
From generative AI in the cockpit to innovative assistance functions: Together with leading technology partners, the Volkswagen Group brands are developing services that go far beyond driving. In this way, we are simplifying interaction with the vehicle, enabling greater convenience for our customers and increasing safety on the road. We are driving forward the development of our car of the future. For example, in our joint venture with the US start-up Rivian Automotive, or with the China Electronic Architecture, developed in collaboration with our Chinese partner Xpeng.
Artificial intelligence – intuitively controlled
When it comes to the car of the future, we consistently rely on artificial intelligence. One example: In early 2024, Volkswagen was the first major car manufacturer to integrate ChatGPT into vehicles as standard. Many of our brands now use ChatGPT in their models, including Audi, Seat and Škoda. Whether navigation, music or air conditioning: All of these could already be controlled using voice assistants. With ChatGPT, the possibilities increase enormously: The AI can, for example, explain places of interest, give football results or solve maths problems on the move – simply and intuitively controlled in natural language, without losing sight of the traffic. Good to know: The AI has no access to vehicle and user data, so sensitive information remains protected at all times.
Software-defined vehicle – intelligent right from the start
Software as the starting point: The Volkswagen Group is developing new car models as software-defined vehicles (SDVs) – a major development leap away from the classic vehicle concept, in which the hardware with mechanical and electronic components takes center stage. With the SDV, the software becomes the central element of the user experience; the vehicle’s intelligence is based on programmable systems.
Car Brain Challenge
Students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs are invited to develop their vision of an AI -driven vehicle experience — inspired by the spirit of the film icon “Herbie,” the car with intelligence and personality.
The tech challenge is scheduled to start in autumn 2025. We will provide more information here starting in October.
IAA Mobility 2025
The IAA MOBILITY will take place in Munich from 9th to 14th September, 2025. On its way to becoming a global technology driver in the automotive industry, the company will provide plenty of proof points for this in the form of technological innovations and celebrate several vehicle world premieres from 7th to 12th September.
