Artificial Intelligence in the Automotive Industry
In every process, we examine how artificial intelligence (AI ) can improve the result so that we can offer our customers even more attractive products and organize our work more efficiently.
Wherever we see potential, we utilize artificial intelligence in a targeted manner. Scalable, responsible and with clear industrial benefits. Our ambition: AI everywhere, in every process. Hauke Stars
The value of artificial intelligence – no process without AI
For us, AI is a strategic driver on the road to the future of the automotive industry. Whether in autonomous driving or in quality assurance, in the supply chain or in administrative work: We are bringing artificial intelligence into all areas. In this way, we are accelerating development cycles, automating processes and promoting new ideas – including in design and material construction. This is how we are actively shaping the future of the automotive industry.
Artificial intelligence in practice – more than 1,200 AI applications in use Over 1,200 AI applications are already active across the Group, with hundreds more in development or about to be implemented. Artificial intelligence is used in all central areas of the Volkswagen Group: from vehicle development and production to cybersecurity and also in the Group-wide exchange of knowledge. We want to become significantly faster and more efficient through the consistent, scalable use of AI along the entire automotive value chain.
Advantages through AI We use artificial intelligence to improve our products and processes. The difference is tangible: more attractive vehicles and faster availability of technologieseven better service for customersmore efficient use of energy and materials in productionlower costs and CO₂ emissions
Artificial intelligence – human judgment
AI needs rules, and this also applies to the automotive industry. That is why we act on the basis of ethical standards and European regulation.

The Car of the Future
Automobile mobility of tomorrow – far more than just driving a car
From generative AI in the cockpit to innovative assistance functions: Together with leading technology partners, the Volkswagen Group brands are developing services that go far beyond driving. In this way, we are simplifying interaction with the vehicle, enabling greater convenience for our customers and increasing safety on the road. We are driving forward the development of our car of the future. For example, in our joint venture with the US start-up Rivian Automotive, or with the China Electronic Architecture, developed in collaboration with our Chinese partner Xpeng.
Artificial intelligence – intuitively controlled
When it comes to the car of the future, we consistently rely on artificial intelligence. One example: In early 2024, Volkswagen was the first major car manufacturer to integrate ChatGPT into vehicles as standard. Many of our brands now use ChatGPT in their models, including Audi, Seat and Škoda. Whether navigation, music or air conditioning: All of these could already be controlled using voice assistants. With ChatGPT, the possibilities increase enormously: The AI can, for example, explain places of interest, give football results or solve maths problems on the move – simply and intuitively controlled in natural language, without losing sight of the traffic. Good to know: The AI has no access to vehicle and user data, so sensitive information remains protected at all times.
Software-defined vehicle – intelligent right from the start
Software as the starting point: The Volkswagen Group is developing new car models as software-defined vehicles (SDVs) – a major development leap away from the classic vehicle concept, in which the hardware with mechanical and electronic components takes center stage. With the SDV, the software becomes the central element of the user experience; the vehicle’s intelligence is based on programmable systems.
More Efficient, Smarter, More Resilient: Volkswagen Group collaborates with AWS to help transform production for the age of AI
Volkswagen Group advances production digitalizationThe Digital Production Platform (DPP) – Volkswagen’s “factory cloud” – enables widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI ) and cutting-edge IT systems across all sites43 factories worldwide already connectedNext step: Preparing for software-defined vehiclesCollaboration with AWS extended for another five years
More efficient, smarter, more resilient: Volkswagen Group is gearing up its vehicle production for an AI -powered future. Volkswagen and Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS) are extending their collaboration on the Digital Production Platform (DPP) – Volkswagen’s “factory cloud” designed to support automotive manufacturing – for another five years. Volkswagen uses the DPP to deploy AI and cutting-edge IT systems across its global production sites. This makes production more flexible and faster, reduces IT costs, and helps bring new models to market more quickly.
Originally launched as an industrial partner network, Volkswagen and AWS have developed the DPP into a key digital link helping connect order intake, logistics, and manufacturing – helping ensure seamless data flows throughout the entire process chain. This is a fundamental prerequisite for the widespread use of AI , a core strategic objective of the company. In addition, the DPP helps enable Volkswagen to roll out new IT systems as standardized solutions across its factories. Across the Volkswagen Group, 43 sites in Europe, North and South America are already connected to the DPP. In total, the Volkswagen Group operates 114 production facilities worldwide. “Our ambition is to become the global automotive tech driver. To achieve this, we are consistently digitalizing and connecting all areas of our company. Our goal is to bring products and technologies to our customers even faster.
Innovation in the Automotive Industry
In every process and every development, we examine how artificial intelligence (AI ) can improve the result in order to offer our customers even more attractive products and make our work more efficient.
Partnerships
With our brands, experience and global expertise, we are uniquely positioned worldwide. We are expanding our capabilities in a targeted manner by collaborating with leading technology partners. Our credo: We develop the best technologies for our customers – as quickly as possible.
IAA Mobility 2025
The IAA MOBILITY will take place in Munich from 9th to 14th September, 2025. Integrity & Compliance
However, the provision and application of AI also comes with a great responsibility. The Volkswagen Group has created Ethical Principles for AI as a basic orientation for the ethical use of AI systems. These are based on the cross-brand and value-based foundation of the Code of Conduct.
Through our total commitment to integrity and compliance, we ensure comprehensive protection for our company, our employees, customers and business partners. Our values-based approach and consistent compliance with our guidelines form the foundation for trust and success. Nicolas Heyer
Our Whistleblower System
We want to know about and prevent possible misconduct. Every information helps.
Anti-Corruption at the Volkswagen Group
There is no place for corruption at Volkswagen! We have a clear zero-tolerance policy regarding active and passive corruption.
Highly Automated and Autonomous Driving
Together with Carizon, we are developing an AI -supported automated driving system that takes local traffic conditions into account. Safety in every driving situation is our top priority. For the EU and the USA, we are aiming for speedy series approval of the driverless VW ID. Buzz AD. It is the basis for fully autonomous mobility services with entire vehicle fleets.
CARIAD – Automotive software for Volkswagen
CARIAD designs automotive software that supports the Volkswagen Group on its way to becoming a global automotive tech driver.
Autonomous driving – even safer and more comfortable on the road in future
Driving a car without having to intervene: This is no longer a utopia, but will soon be a reality. Driving functions will then be taken over by technology and software on request – networked, digital and safe. And we can sit back and relax. We are focusing the portfolio of our Group brands both on autonomous vehicles for mobility services and on operating software for autonomous vehicle fleets.
Mobile services and solutions for fleets – scalable for large series
Our cities need connected and affordable mobility solutions. We at the Volkswagen Group see this as a great opportunity – and are the first vehicle manufacturer to develop an autonomous, self-driving Level 4 fleet vehicle for large-scale production. With fleets based on the VW ID. Buzz AD, we will be offering passengers a new way to get from A to B easily in the future. For us, innovation means that we consistently think ahead right from the development stage. Our vehicles are designed from the outset for production in large series. This makes the fleets almost infinitely scalable – a major advantage over our competitors. Our product portfolio is holistic: The overall solution from our subsidiary MOIA consists of autonomous vehicles and operating software for autonomous vehicle fleets. This provides our customers with an all-round complete mobility system.
